Commercial Active Test Shoot with Professional Triathletes

Kristen Peterson and Allen Gardner have a future in active modeling if the whole professional triathlete thing doesn’t work out for them, but seeing their recent results makes me think they’re not too worried.

We got together on an early morning in Boulder, Colorado to drive up to Gross Reservoir for a commercial styled active photography test shoot.  On the agenda: triathlete lifestyle images and edgier advertising shots as well.  Half REI and half Nike meets Xterra meets fine art and whatever else comes along as I start pulling the trigger on my Nikon.

It was the first real test of the Elinchrom Ranger portable studio strobe system and it came through with flying colors.  We managed to keep the deep octabox from turning into a sail while shooting the images of the athletes on the tree stump and the bare reflector pulled through with excellent range for the water images.  Important note that we befriended Ranger Dave up at the reservoir who gave us supervised permission to enter the reservoir up to waist deep.  Big shout out to Dave for being super cool and giving us a ride out of the ‘hole’ in the back of his ranger truck.

I’m really favoring the desaturated look on my active work these days but also through in some alternative processing.  I’d be curious to know what your favorite is, so drop a comment below if you have a second.  Also, checkout Kristen Peterson and Allen Gardner in their pursuit to triathlete world domination.
