Produced for SmartEtailing to announce new features of their service offerings for bike shops – specifically responsive websites that function and look great whether on a traditional browser or mobile device. We shot this in one day and turned around the edit and client revisions within one week.
We produced this cycling commercial for Cateye Co. based in Japan. To demonstrate their daytime cycling lights we used both a road cyclist and a bike commuter and filmed them in real-world use scenarios, from canyon roads to city streets, and everywhere in between. Big thanks to everyone who helped out on this project and to Cateye Japan for trusting us with the entire production here in Colorado.
Most scenes were shot on the Sony FS7 with a couple aerials on the Inspire 2 drone and a canyon scene captured by 2nd camera, Thomas Woodson, on the Sony A7SII. Editing, color and visual effects by Pinto Pictures in Colorado and post production sound design was handled by Keith White Audio in Vancouver, BC.
Being based in Boulder, Colorado often means I shoot a lot of outdoor work. From riding and running, to simply enjoying what Colorado has to offer, brands that are based here want active imagery on location. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t get to work on advertising and catalog shoots in completely different realms such as this one with Susan Lanci Designs in San Diego.
For the overhaul of the Susan Lanci Designs look, a luxury pet fashion brand, I shot ten different fashion setups in a high end home in San Diego this spring. From couples in cocktail attire, to family picnic scenes, to a shirtless male model with a dachshund over his shoulders – we created a wide range of images for this client in just one [well orchestrated] day with the help of LeeMarc staff.
Martin Homes, based in Greeley, Colorado, hired me to photograph a recently finished new home that had just been moved into. The homeowner did an incredible job of furnishing the house and it was a pleasure to shoot. Made me a bit jealous of their place!
I was hired to shoot some product photography for Enduro Bites, manufacturer of energy food products and supplements. They make some delicious solid food products as well as a beet powder that tastes as good as it looks. Being able to accommodate both on-location lifestyle and action photography as well as studio product images is something I like to provide so my clients have a one stop shop for everything they need.
I’ve shot often with Kara Goucher over these past couple of years and it’s always fun and relaxed. Kara is someone who’s gone through the gauntlet of press and media as an olympic athlete and grown into a renowned brand ambassador as a professional athlete, wife and mother. The privilege of shooting with her and her family over the years has afforded me the ability to make everyone comfortable with my presence on set – whether it’s on location with hair and makeup or in their home. Addaday hired me to produce still images of Kara to compliment their short film that was being shot in Boulder. A few of the selects are shown here.
While Timothy Olson was in town filming a short video, Addaday hired me to join the project to produce a small library of product photography and lifestyle images. I worked with Tim over one afternoon in a handful of locations in Boulder, Colorado incorporating Addaday muscle rollers.
I worked with RockyMounts to shoot a campaign of images featuring their new security line of bike locks. Boulder isn’t the most urban or gritty city around but we wanted to showcase the safety and strength of their locks – specifically The Compton model. The Compton is a super, super tough lock based off a super duty padlock designed to keep scooters locked up or in this case, your bike in a tough area.
We captured lifestyle photography consisting of scenes based on a college campus, a modern upscale downtown area, a public transit scenario and a tougher, grittier alley to echo the personality of each of the bike locks.
Client: The Appetite Ride/Patron Tequila
Reigniting the passion for what you do, through adventure on the bike.
Filmed over the journey on bike from Leadville, Colorado to Aspen, Colorado among a dozen friends, for the Aspen Food and Wine Festival. This short film features retired professional cyclist, Lucas Euser, alongside celebrity chefs, Biju Thomas and Chris Cosentino.
I handled lead camera operation with Molly Arenberg as second camera. Initial edit by myself and final edits by Troy Ten Eyck.
Music: Winter Sunlight by Good News, licensed through Premiumbeat.com.
Clif Bar wanted a fun, event video that encapsulated their new event, the ‘Klunker Crit’ and to boost their social media content, incorporating the hashtags “FeedYourAdventure” and “ClifBarKlunkerCrit.” Hosted at Sanitas Brewing in Boulder, Colorado – we filmed this piece during the afternoon event and it was edited by Troy Ten Eyck.
I worked with Boulder Cycle Sport to produce a series of four short, funny commercials to air on Comcast during the Tour de France. They came to me with the original concept of ‘We don’t know ____”…”We know bikes.” The idea being to contrast the shop’s owner, Brandon Dwight, attempting sports he’s not exactly good at compared to scenes of him doing what he -is- good at, and that’s riding bikes.
I shot these over a handful of short 2 hour to half day shoots on location in and around Boulder, Colorado on the Sony FS7 camera platform. I did a quick turnaround on the editing in order to have the spots ready to go for the July running of the Tour.
Special thanks to Rally Sport for letting us use their pool and to Brandon Dwight for your acting!
The Nikon D5 camera was recently delivered to patiently waiting buyers, including me, from it’s initial pre-order in January. I wanted to get shooting with it straight away to get comfortable with the new layout of the controls and to see if there were any drastic differences in the images coming out of my other camera, the older D4. I had been talking with Breeze – a registered dietician, happy wife and proud mom here in Boulder – about shooting some active lifestyle images. The weather worked out on a sunny afternoon just outside of town and we got to work on testing this new camera. I put Breeze through a variety of running photography scenes and fitness photography setups and she crushed it. Since then, I’ve shared the images with a client and it looks like we’ll be working together again soon!
For Studio Shed’s recent update to their website, I photographed a fantastic home overlooking the Solana Beach area in California near San Diego. Shooting both exteriors and interiors of the Studio Shed on this property, a variety of new images were produced to add to their website. One of the images is now featured as the opening image on their homepage.
Under wraps until recently, I haven’t been able to share the images we produced for women’s cycling clothing brand shebeest! Through some very thorough location scouting and logistics planning ahead of time, we were able to put together an entire catalog shoot in one day, here in Colorado.
We used four locations in one day – from tree line rural gravel roads in the mountains, to a spin studio in town, to the small town of Niwot and an empty dirt farm road, we photographed women cycling in both active and lifestyle scenes.
Next week we’ll be shooting in Vista, CA for their Spring 2017 catalog – looking forward to spending some time on the coast!
For a recent shoot for the US launch of Qloom mountain bike apparel, we needed to find locations that incorporated mountainous landscape as well as relaxed pre and post-ride lifestyle environments. Hanging out around a campsite or having a post-ride beer was just as important to the imagery for Qloom as the group ride photos on the trail. We scouted locations west of Boulder and came up with a one day shoot itinerary to produce enough diverse still and motion assets for their launch a month later.
We were hired by Nuun Hydration to conceptualize and produce a short web commercial highlighting their new product called “Plus” for Nuun. The requirements of the web commercial was that it needed to show how Plus was used as an add-on to their existing product (Nuun), why someone would use it and the related benefits. Their sponsored athlete, Kara Goucher, needed to be used as the center of the piece, being used for the voiceover as well as being featured on screen.
The piece needed to be upbeat and focus on celebrating the successes in sport compared to documenting the grind that some hydration or sports drink companies focus on. Also, as often as possible, Nuun wanted to incorporate both women and groups of people versus individuals. Lastly, we needed to showcase a variety of outdoor sports in multiple locations without going over budget.
We casted athletes for ultra running, swimming, cycling as well as trail running with a dog to provide variety in the sports. We filmed Kara in two locations over one half day and then shot the other sport vignettes in 2 hour blocks in subsequent weeks. Unfortunately, we had to battle with one of the wettest springs in Boulder on record so reschedules and postponements were frequent. We could have filmed in the rain, but it wouldn’t have contributed to the upbeat, happy mood of the piece Nuun wanted.
We were also able to create four sport vignette edits for Instagram that Nuun could use to promote the product, while staying within their budget. A big thanks to everyone who was involved and especially to Adam Rosenberg, my editor, who was able to help knock this one out as well as come up with some nice Instagram cuts.
Retul hired us to produce a short video focusing on two different customer experience scenarios. One story centered around the world champion triathlete, Tim Don and the other was a story about Julie Emmerman, a cyclist. We interviewed both athletes in the Retul fit studio, shot b roll of their fits being done as well as captured scenes of them riding in Boulder, Colorado.
We created a short film for the Just Go Harder Foundation to promote their new cycling event – a ride through the Indian Peaks area of Colorado. I captured still images and video in the same half day which we used in their social media, digital and print marketing materials. Adam Rosenberg edited the footage down into nice route highlight video showing off the scenery and various terrain that riders would encounter along the way.
Soleus Running hired us to produce images of Kara Goucher and Nick Symmonds, two athletes they recently signed an endorsement deal with. We shot on location at a track in Boulder, Colorado.
It’s been a stormy spring here in Boulder and unfortunately I’ve had to reschedule many of my location lifestyle photoshoots and videoshoots. That said, we were able to dodge the thunderstorms and shoot some great mountain bike photography this week with a new custom bike frame building company started by Chris Rebula and called Rebula MTB. Seen here is a fun hardtail 29er built for trail riding, not racing cross country – models and pricing soon here: http://rebulamtb.com/.
